Pen-y-bryn Lodge

An elegant, spacious, Victorian mansion, steeped in history, Pen-y-bryn offers fine accommodation, epicurean cuisine and exceptional hospitality in an environment that combines the opulence of the 19th Century with the modern conveniences of today.

Pen-y-bryn (Welsh for “Top of the Hill”) is a unique historic building and reputedly the largest single-level timber dwelling in Australasia. A private home until 1995, today the lodge provides international guests with the ultimate relaxing retreat in New Zealand’s best-preserved and most charming historic town. Dining at Pen-y-bryn is a particular delight, with gourmet ‘table d’hôte’ cuisine prepared by your hosts, made with lodge-grown and local produce and served in our opulent dining room, accompanied by boutique New Zealand wines. Your owner/hosts delight in giving their personal hospitality – making Pen-y-bryn the perfect place to indulge, relax and unwind.

Lodge Facilities:

  • Billiard / Pool table
  • Gym
  • In house Spa services
  • Wi-Fi access

With only five elegantly appointed en-suite guestrooms, offering all modern conveniences, Pen-y-bryn accommodates just ten guests at a time. Guests are invited to make full use of the lodge’s facilities, whether to simply relax, enjoy a game of snooker on the magnificent billiard room’s historic slate table, curl up with a good book in the library or enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Throughout the lodge there is plenty to explore, from the artworks that adorn the walls to the views over the Pacific Ocean and out to the Kakanui Mountains. Our immaculate gardens are particularly popular with native birds that serenade guests as they enjoy their breakfast or wander the grounds.

Local Experiences

Oamaru is famed as the home of New Zealand’s largest colony of Blue Penguins, arriving en masse every evening from a day out at sea. But Oamaru is also New Zealand’s best-preserved historic town, with an intact Victorian precinct featuring astounding architecture that today houses galleries, shops, artist studios and cafes. We are also home to the Waitaki wine district, the country’s newest, producing some of the finest Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in New Zealand, and winning awards wherever they are tasted. Whether you’re interested in wildlife, heritage, or gourmet foods, Oamaru has it all, and more!
